Sauna Hetta
There’s nothing quite like the smell of sauna wood with a lingering aroma of essential oils. Our name comes from the Swedish word for heat, or warmth, but that’s only half of the story.
Hot and cold therapy has been around for years but is recently becoming very mainstream. Add the benefits of cold water plunges into the equation and reap the benefits.
Our location is at Hemscott Hill in Northumberland. You may have heard of The Barn on The Bay already, a coastal farm with an already established weddings, events and accommodation business, and best of all, a private access onto the beach at Druridge Bay.
When you arrive, you’ll be shown around and briefed by one of our sauna guides. We recommend alternating your time between cold plunges and the heat of the sauna, but of course, it’s up to you how you use your time here. You are more than welcome to arrive early and park up to go to the sea before your session.
Hetta comfortably seats 6 people and we offer both private hire sessions for you and your friends, of join in a communal session, we have some very lovely regulars.
Our sessions last for 45 minutes in the sauna and you’ll have 15 minutes afterwards to get changed. To make sure that you’re getting the most out of our sessions we recommend that you have your swimwear on under your clothes when you arrive so that you can start your experience promptly.
Winter & Summer Locations
-
Winter (October-April)
During the winter months Hetta is located next to The Barn On The Bay with more facilities available to users including hot showers, sheltered outdoor seating and when it’s open, access to Coffee in The Cowshed, the Barn’s winter pop up cafe.
You’ll still get the hot/cold benefit as we have our cold water buckets on the sauna but if you prefer a sea dip you’re more than welcome to arrive a bit earlier and park over the road in the car park where you’ll have direct access to the beach.
When the pop up cafe is open you’ll get 10% off food and drinks on the day.
Or, if you’d prefer more solitude we recommend booking onto a session before the cafe opens at 10am.
-
Summer (May-September)
In the summer months we move closer to the sea. It’s on the other side of the road and we nestle ourselves into the dunes next to a beach gate leading straight to the sea.
Our summer location is great for running in and out of the sea but remember that as we’re in the dunes there are no other facilities available (there are loos in nearby Cresswell so we recommend making a stop en route).
Sauna Sessions
Communal Sauna - From £15
With no more than 6 people in each session you can book up to 6 seats in a shared sauna. Sessions are mixed gender but if you would like a gender specific session just ask us. Sessions are 1 hour (includes changing time so expect around 45 minutes in the sauna).
Early Bird Winter Sauna - From £20
The early bird catches the worm, or in our case the sun. During the winter months we offer sunrise sessions where you can come and appreciate the quiet of sunrise before the bustle of the Coffee in The Cowshed Winter Cafe opens. With the sauna perfectly placed to view sunrises from inside you’ll be able to enjoy the included breakfast on the verandah afterwards.
£25 with Breakfast Box that includes tea or coffee, porridge pot, handmade granola bar and a slice of banana & plant based chocolate bread. £20 includes tea or coffee and a porridge pot.
Book the whole sauna - £60 to £90
If you would like to book the whole sauna we have specific group bookings on our bookings page but if you don’t find one to suit you look for a session with 6 remaining spaces and book all 6 and the whole session will be yours. If you can’t find a suitable time please email us and we’ll help.
Sessions are 1 hour (includes changing time so expect around 45 minutes in the sauna). If an hour isn’t enough of a sauna fix you can either book back to back sessions or contact us.
*The 4 people must be the same 4 people for the entirity of the booking and can’t switch with others.

FAQs
-
Each sauna session lasts for 45 minutes with time to get changed before and after, providing ample time for relaxation and rejuvenation. We also run 2 and 3 hour sessions by arrangement.
-
We recommend regular swimwear for wearing in the sauna and flip flops or crocs for outside. You’ll need to bring a towel for wrapping up in and a towel to sit on in the sauna. Removeable jewellery such as pendant necklaces should not be worn in the sauna and you should be careful with metallic objects on swimwear.
-
At our winter location there is access to the loos at The Barn on The Bay. As they are used by cafe visitors you must wear a cover up (towelling robe or similar) and shoes when using them and we ask you to dry off before going in to prevent slipping hazards.
There are 2 shower rooms available for after your sauna.
